6 Signs Your Sewer Line is Broken
There are a few household problems that should never be avoided or left “out of sight, out of mind.” A suspected broken sewer line is one of them. If left unattended, a broken sewer or damaged pipe or can lead to catastrophic property damage, not to mention hazardous health issues.
To avoid dealing with disaster, you should check your sewer line regularly for clues of damage. If you’re unsure of where to start, here are six signs your sewer line is broken – beginning inside your home and working our way outside.
Interior:
- Slow drains. Slow drains can be caused by minor problems. But if more than one drain is draining slower than usual, it can be a sign of a larger issue in your sewer line. Tree root infiltration and a clogged sewer line are the most common causes of slow drains. In this case, it is best to call in a team of professionals to troubleshoot the problem and provide sewer drain line services.
- Sewer smells. If the smell of sewage is seeping through your drains and into your home, you’ll need to take the necessary steps to inspect for a cracked sewer line. The gas from a sewer is toxic and can cause health issues such as eye irritation, headache, and even organ damage. Don’t accept exposure to sewer smells any longer than necessary. Call you a licensed plumber to find the cracked pipe and fix it fast.
- Mold damage. A broken sewer line can lead to damp areas in your home’s walls, ceilings, or floors. If you see evidence of water damage or mold/mildew where you’ve never noticed it before, act quickly to eradicate the issue. Mold spores can lead to serious health issues, and a broken sewer line left in disrepair can wreak havoc on your home both inside and out.
Outdoor:
- Soggy landscaping. Just as a broken sewer line can cause a moisture issue inside the home, soggy landscaping is another telltale sign that you’re dealing with a major problem. If a sewer line is cracked or leaking, you’ll likely notice swampy (not to mention smelly!) areas surrounding the break. A broken sewer line that is seeping into the surrounding land can be hazardous to the environment as well as the people who come in contact with the affected landscaping.
- Lush landscaping spots. If the grass is greener, it might not necessarily be a good sign! Lush landscaping spots of greener-than-usual grass can be caused by a broken sewer line, which also makes for a great source of fertilizer for your lawn (temporarily). While lush grass might seem like a pro, if it is caused by a broken sewer line, it’s definitely a con you’ll want to correct quickly.
- Foundation issues. Extreme sewer line breaks can lead to foundation issues such as new cracks in concrete block and slab. If foundation issues are being caused by a cracked sewer pipe, it is only going to get worse if left unattended. Bad cracks in the foundation can lead to irreparable damage without prompt attention by a professional.
