This basement ‘Y’ sewer cleanout is very accessible and made it easy for us to do a thorough jetter cleanout of the entire drain from house to sewer.

Water or sewage coming back into the house is a sure sign of main drain blockage. The pipes just fill up from the obstruction backward. Wet basement or garage floor drains are your first clue to a pending drain problem. Don’t wait too long.

Aging Iron Drain Pipes – What a Nightmare

Tags :

Category : service

You need to look carefully to understand what you’re seeing. This is a first floor to second floor cast iron sewer pipe, otherwise referred to as soil pipe. It is in many if not most older homes in the Stark County area. It was still being used in the mid-60’s. I know this because I remember helping my dad install soil pipe as a young boy.

Soil pipe were heavy cast iron segments about 3 feet long with a normal end and a flared end. The normal end was inserted into the flared end, packing rope was wedged into the flare. Molten lead was poured over the packing to the top of the flare. This was the technology of the time.

Look carefully at the amount of rust! The remaining active sewer pipe in this home is basically a lace of rust barely being held together. The water you see flowing is waste water from the 2nd floor bathroom, toilet, shower, and sink.

Needless to say, any attempts of ‘sewer cleaning’ would cause the pipe to disintegrate completely. The only remedy in a situation is to have a qualified plumber re-plumb the whole stack and possibly even replace pipe to the city sanitary sewer connection or to the septic system.

The key takeaway for DIY homeowners is to know the risks of poking and prodding existing plumbing. Sometimes there is no easy way out, only the hard way and the harder way.

Believe It or Not DIY Can Cost More

Tags :

Category : service

So many people call with the same problems. We’ve decided to blog certain drain repairs to give DIY homeowners an idea of what and how to tackle some drain jobs, and when to call in the pros from the outset.

Augers (as shown below) are essential for certain drain cleaning jobs, provided they are use by persons knowledgeable of the risks. It is very easy to get clothing and gloves tangled into the cable and risk serious injury.

We try always to use our far safer ‘sectional’ cable machine to prevent such mishaps. It is not uncommon to be called in by homeowners who have twisted and knotted up the rental company’s cable. That’s a big expense on top of the unit rental itself. One DIY customer got the drain auger cable so stuck in their main drain line that it had to be cut – and then replaced. Besides that, they had to pay an excavator to dig up the area of blockage in order to retrieve the cable. That was a very expensive and failed DIY job that ended up costing a rental fee, cable, drain pro, and excavator.

NEO Findings and Recommendations: Hydro-jetted and cleared East side downspout drains and located problem areas as well. Cleared garage floor drain trap, found that garage drain runs inside home to main drain. West side downspout drains were all clogged at ground entry and unable to jet clear. Recommend digging up and and replacing clay tile with plastic and further jetting if needed to clear and/or determine location going to road.
